Some of my youth was spent on a small (5,000?) acre farm in northwest Wyoming. Milking and caring for cows was part of my job. You may recall the classic photo of a farmer milking cows and squirting cats in the face. Been there, done that. Growing hay and grain for feed for those cows. Done that. Rounding up the cows every day of the year so they can be milked and fed. Done that. But that farm became relatively inefficient and we moved away to the big city (Cody, Wyoming) before my tenth birthday. Others were finding more efficient ways to produce milk, meat, and grain. And that’s part of the story of how things got to be the way they are today on modern industrial farms. As the world approaches 8 billion people even more efficiency is pursued. Meanwhile, yesterday, at Fresh Pond Reservation, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the 30th most densely populated urban area in the country, I found this calf wandering around, having lost its mama: https://flic.kr/p/phzacX
