Lee Atwater as an example
AC W: "Quotes are not necessary..."
Right, because there are none. This is a tacit admission that your original remarks are nothing more than a fantasy in your head. Its what you want to believe about somebody else--but it turns out to be true about you. This is known as a projection or taking unconsciously unpleasant aspects of your character and projecting those qualities onto another person. You paint all Democrats into racists because that's what you are.
AC W: "...Byrd is still embraced by the Democratic Party."
As practicing Christians they are obligated to embrace a person who confesses their sin and asks forgiveness. Obviously you are not trapped by that primitive mythology. Which reminds me of Lee Atwater, one of the preeminent ratfuckers for the Republican Party. Carl Rove was one of his students.
Atwater apologizes:
"Shortly before his death from a brain tumor, Atwater said he had converted to Catholicism, through the help of Fr. John Hardon, S.J.,[10] and, in an act of repentance, Atwater issued a number of public and written letters to individuals to whom he had been opposed during his political career, including Dukakis. In a letter to Tom Turnipseed dated June 28, 1990, he stated, "It is very important to me that I let you know that out of everything that has happened in my career, one of the low points remains the so-called 'jumper cable' episode," adding, "my illness has taught me something about the nature of humanity, love, brotherhood and relationships that I never understood, and probably never would have. So, from that standpoint, there is some truth and good in everything."[11]
In a February 1991 article for Life Magazine, Atwater wrote:
My illness helped me to see that what was missing in society is what was missing in me: a little heart, a lot of brotherhood. The '80s were about acquiring — acquiring wealth, power, prestige. I know. I acquired more wealth, power, and prestige than most. But you can acquire all you want and still feel empty. What power wouldn't I trade for a little more time with my family? What price wouldn't I pay for an evening with friends? It took a deadly illness to put me eye to eye with that truth, but it is a truth that the country, caught up in its ruthless ambitions and moral decay, can learn on my dime. I don't know who will lead us through the '90s, but they must be made to speak to this spiritual vacuum at the heart of American society, this tumor of the soul."
Amen, brother. As an ultra-liberal Democrat and absolute reductionist, I would have absolutely no problem embracing that man. Your time for that, I would say, is not yet here.
Another brain tumore has motivated David Kuo to speak out about his time in the White House.
AC W: "This is a discussion board. Nothing more.
No. It is way more. It is a place where you can project your nightmares about life and the world onto a large audience. It is a place where you can pull stuff off the merrygoround of your internal rantings and exaggerations and projections and say they are the truth about other people. It is a place where you can tell a lie and see it propagated at the speed of light. Yeah, its more than a discussion board.

Racism and the Democratic Party
AC W: "Is the name Robert Byrd familiar to you?"
Yes. But obviously not to you:
"Byrd has since explicitly renounced his earlier views on racial segregation.[36][37] Byrd said that he regrets filibustering and voting against the Civil Rights Act of 1964[15] and would change it if he had the opportunity. He has stated that joining the KKK was "the greatest mistake I ever made".[36] Byrd has also said that his views changed dramatically after his teenage grandson was killed in a 1982 traffic accident, which put him in a deep emotional valley. "The death of my grandson caused me to stop and think," said Byrd, adding he came to realize that black people love their children as much as he does his.[38]" (from Wikipedia)
That reference to Robert Byrd makes you look like a person stuck in the past. And a rather unsavory past at that. You seem unable to recognize that the Democractic Party, and the Republican Party of today, are not the same parties of that time in our countries history. If people like George Wallace and Robert Byrd can overcome their racist past, it is possible that others have and can do the same. Alas, SOME people will probably never be able to do so and will remain in TODAY'S Republican Party.
AC W: "Lincoln the Republican, leader of the Republican Party, issued the Emancipation Proclamation."
I know a bit of history. I've done some reading. You might consider doing the same so that you don't always end up telling half the story and standing on the wrong side of history.

The Party That Freed The Slaves...
AC W: "It's the party that freed the slaves."
No. A group of people, about 150 years ago, led by Abraham Lincoln, issued a document called the Emancipation Proclamation. It did not EXACTLY free the slaves.
Could you be so kind, in the future, to inform yourself before opening your mouth and inserting your foot?
When the Civil Rights Movement took over the Democratic Party, 1963-1968, millions of "Democrats" left the party and joined the Republican Party. Are the names Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms, Trent Lott, etc, familiar to you?
Then there's this, the Lynching Postcards part of American history. Here's a paragraph to keep in mind:
"Lynchings began in frontier communities as acts of vigilante "justice." Minority groups other than blacks--namely, Mexicans, Chinese, Mormons, white factory workers, Native Americans and Italians--were also victims. Following the Civil War, however, lynching was generally sanctioned, and often committed, by community leaders in the South; the practice was almost exclusively inflicted on black Southern men by white Southern men, and functioned specifically to enforce white supremacy after the abolition of slavery. These particular incidents were characterized by mob frenzy and extraordinary cruelty. Victims were often mutilated and murdered for minor, unproven or nonexistent transgressions. Reliable statistics were not kept until 1882, when the Tuskagee Institute began to count lynching deaths. According to its records, 3,437 blacks and 1,293 whites were lynched between 1882 and 1951. As the North and South became more integrated, the number of lynchings diminished, yet, incredibly, antilynching legislation was never enacted at the federal level."

McCain's Saddam HUSSEIN Connection
Lisa C: "Is anyone working on McCain's campaign?"
Yes. This man, William Timmons, is the McCain Transition Team Chief. He once worked for an unpleasant fellow named Saddam HUSSEIN. If that name is not familiar to you, then HERE'S STILL MORE...
Here's a picture of him shaking hands with an American named Donald Rumsfeld.

Catching & Cooking Squirrel
cnbcsucks: "I don't think any ideas have been discarded yet. I don't think any lessons have been learned yet."
You are probably correct, sir. A relatively small number of undecided voters will likely shift to a candidate and decide this election--giving us a slightly different government, which may or may not make a small or large difference in our future prospects. But NOTHING will likely be learned by the large number of people on the left or right of that relatively small center. It will take a natural catastrophe, an unwinnable war, or economic collapse to change just the OPINIONS of many people. Or maybe the freakish condition of some sort of tri-fecta of all those things, simultaneously, to change minds. And minds won't change unless one or all those events has a direct impact on a person.
On the other hand, a shrinking economy, with shrinking advertising budgets, will eventually impact the here's-the-latest-on-Paris-Hilton crowd with new programming about how to catch and cook squirrels from your local park. Eventually even Rush Limbaugh's $400,000,000, 8 year contract might have to be renegotiated.

CURRENT CASH CRUNCH CRISIS CHRONOLOGY
1981: John McCain and Charles Keating meet and become BFFs. The Keating Five scandal in 97 seconds...
August 1994: The Republican Party presents the Contract With Ameria
January 1995: Republicans gain majorities in the House and Senate
1995: Republicans began introducing laws that favored big business over individuals, like the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act. This bit of bambozzlement cleared the road ahead for the ENRON disaster. Majorities sufficient to override a Clinton veto included such idiot Democrats as Ted Kennedy, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi (it would have passed without them--and they would have some honor now).
November 4, 1999: Senator Phil Gramm, Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, presided over a session where the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act was passed 90-8, making it FILIBUSTER and VETO proof.
December 15, 2000: Phil Gramm slips 262-page measure called the Commodity Futures Modernization Act into an omnibus spending bill. This bill contained the Enron Loophole.
late 2001: Enron collapses, Bush says he may have met Ken Lay in a reception line at the White House.
October 15, 2002: President Hosts Conference on Minority Homeownership, George Washington University, Washington, D.C.
February 23, 2004: Greenspan says ARMs might be better deal, By Sue Kirchhoff and Barbara Hagenbaugh, USA TODAY ARM=Adjustable Rate Mortgage
March 26, 2004: "One other thing I've done, is I've called on private sector mortgage banks and banks to be more aggressive about lending money to first-time home buyers. And the response has been really good. There's a lot of people in this -- our communities around the country that deeply care about the issue of homeownership, and they've been responsive." - George W. Bush, U.S. President

Not exactly...
Florida's Electoral College votes were still up in the air when the issue went to the Supreme Court. THEY stopped a recount, thus deciding the Florida election in Bush's favor.
Indeed, the Electoral College is part of the United States Constitution. See the Twelfth Amendment.
It is one of a number of mechanisms created to thwart the will of the voters if they make a "mistake".
Voting on Tuesday--which makes it harder for working people to cast a ballot, is another example.
Recount, a made for TV movie, was shown on HBO Monday night.

Economic Collapse or Slightly Higher Taxes?
Charlie V: "Well Cynthia we will see just how poor we are in four years when we are all taxed out of our homes. Hide your wallets there's a lib a coming"
This is a bit of an exaggeration, Charlie. People like you and me, who make $250,000 or more a year will pay slightly more in taxes in an Obama administration. But on the other hand, in a McCain administration, we will make out like bandits! Unfortunately, the enormous deficits of the last almost three decades are one of the fundamental causes of the CURRENT CASH CRUNCH CRISIS. McCain's promise of even more tax cuts will only dig a deeper deficit ditch. You may have noticed that NOBODY is now saying that DEFICITS DON'T MATTER. With good reason. The United States has to pay interest on all that borrowed money ($406 Billion in fiscal 2006).
So what's it going to be, Charlie? Collapse of the American economy, all your money being used for toilet paper, OR slightly higher taxes? Or would you like to continue the current trend--till you're dead, then leave it for your children and grandchildren?
