Some percentage of the population is homosexual. People can do two things with those internal realities: accept or suppress them. If you are very religious or a "natural" Republican, then you will tend to suppress those feelings and behavior. So the Republican party is sort of a refuge that both helps you suppress those feelings and offers a "CURE".
Personally I think there is a genetic basis for homosexuality, just like there's a genetic basis for me being male, namely having an X and a Y chromosome. At one point in history X and Y chromosomes were invisible and there was no such understanding of what made one a male or female (with the possible explanation of god as the arbiter of such things).
